In memory…

A man once sent his beloved step-daughters home, and then sat with their father as he drew his last breaths. Their father had been on life support for days, his heart broken into pieces by a massive infarction and his organs shutting down. The man loved these girls so much that he wanted them to remember their father alive and laughing. He loved their father enough to ease his passing by being there for those last moments as he transitioned to the next journey.

This man, a hero, a veteran, a much loved step-dad, lost his job of twenty-two years yesterday. I don’t know what else factored into his next decision, but he somehow chose to die. Today, my niece’s husband, another one of the good guys, went to check on his step-father in law, and found him dead. It was one of those really crappy moments, but he couldn’t let her go in with him. Thank you, Jason.

Tim, step-father extraordinaire, leaves behind a legacy of love. His generous heart encompassed two little girls and gave them a safe and unconditionally loving place to be. His love for these girls transcended divorce and miles of separation as they grew up. Their children are his grandchildren and will benefit from his generous heart, even though he will not be there.

So, people, let’s raise a glass and say farewell to a hero. Let’s sing his praises, honor his memory, and, please, let’s tell stories of his life that make us laugh. Let’s honor him as a man whose spirit embraced us all as family simply because we were his step-daughters’ family.

Travel safely and joyfully, Tim Highsmith. Your life’s work was well done. You will be remembered and your teachings will be handed down to generations to come. Your legacy of love lives on in the hearts of us all.
