Happy All Hallows Eve.
Or…it’s Halloween, bitches, let’s get our freak on!
Tonight, I got to see just how theatrical Halloween has become. My grandgirls went Goth. This meant black clothing, clunky black boots, black hair spray, white makeup and black eyeliner and lipstick. They are ages five and eight. Can I just say how stunningly beautiful they were? I actually hated how good they looked, because they should just be babies. Funny, though, they tried to tell their mom, the daughter I sent to art school during the ’90′s, what was and was not Goth. Ha! She let them know, right quickly, that she knew Goth way better than they did.
My dear daughter attended the Savannah School of Art and Design, SCAD for short. The day after registration, all freshmen ditched the clothing their parents had sent with them to school and immediately replaced it all with black clothing and Doc Martins. I was smart and didn’t buy her any “school clothes”. I had seen those students. I knew what was coming and just saved myself some money. So this girl knew her some Goth, and those grandgirls were up against a true expert! Good luck, suckers!
The girls had friends over to go Trick or Treat with them. There was Ella, a natural blonde, who also was a Goth girl. She had colorful hairpieces to add to her gorgeous blonde hair. She and Miranda have been buddies since the crib, and her tall elegance and Nordic looks counterbalance the more compact beauty of my half Korean grandgirls. They don’t see any differences that matter. I find that beautiful. Friendship should always be childlike.
There was also a Ninja, Ella’s brother, Chase, and a Mummy in cousin and good friend Niko. The costuming and makeup were amazing.
Halloween became theatre tonight. Gone are the plasticky costumes, replaced by repurposed clothing and the magic of makeup. Ziegfield would have been thrilled, I’m sure, to see the creativity and magic of this night. Hollywood would be jealous that it was all achieved so cheaply.
I hope you all had a safe and wonderful Halloween, ate too much candy, drank too much wine, and wore too much makeup. I hope all you Goth Girls, Witches, Sexy Black Cats, Ninjas, Mummies, Zombies, Bears, Astronauts, etc., had lots of fun! That’s what this holiday is all about.
This is a holiday that heralds Fall. Go enjoy it and chase some leaves while you’re at it.
I remember being stunned at how pretty my little gothy witch Emily looked a couple of years ago with her blue hair and black lipstick. Now go put some pics on Facebook so I can ooh and ahh and the loveliness!
